Dr. Michael Wittenberger, a board-certified OB-GYN and reproductive endocrinologist at HRC Fertility in San Diego, was recently featured in Cradlewise in an article titled “What are AFP levels in pregnancy and what they reveal about fetal health.”
In the article, Dr. Wittenberger provides expert insight into AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) screening, a crucial prenatal test used to evaluate the risk of certain birth defects and chromosomal conditions. He explains, “Based on these considerations, an elevated AFP level is associated with certain fetal conditions like open neural tube defects, abdominal wall defects, fetal urinary obstruction or kidney damage, fetal anemia and fetal teratomas.” While an elevated AFP can indicate potential concerns, it’s not a definitive diagnosis. Abnormal results should always be followed by additional diagnostic testing and personalized care to ensure the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.
Dr. Wittenberger’s approach reflects the personalized and comprehensive care patients receive at HRC Fertility, supporting families not just through conception but throughout the entire reproductive journey with expert guidance and clarity at every step.
