Dr. Natalia Llarena discusses endometriosis and pelvic floor therapy.

Dr. Natalia Llarena was recently featured in a HealthCentral article written by Janet Lee titled “Can Pelvic Floor Therapy Help With Endometriosis?”

Dr. Natalia Llarena of HRC Fertility Pasadena explains that endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent, chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to uterine endometrial cells is found outside the uterus. These cells often appear in the pelvis, including on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, and bowel, but they can also migrate to the kidneys, diaphragm, lungs, and even the brain. There are many theories about why this happens, says Dr. Llarena. One common theory is that these cells migrate out of the uterus through the fallopian tubes, which is called retrograde menstruation. Other theories suggest that the lymphatic, immune, and circulatory systems, as well as genetic factors, may also contribute.
The article spotlights a small, randomized, controlled study of women with endometriosis, published in Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. This study found that pelvic floor therapy helped improve pelvic floor relaxation and reduced chronic pelvic pain and painful sex scores. Dr. Llarena states, “PFT doesn’t address the pathophysiology behind endometriosis, and it’s not a substitute for conventional therapy, but it can help improve quality of life.” Pelvic floor therapy can help by reducing pelvic muscle tension through techniques like massage, acupressure, and cupping. By easing tension in the abdominal and pelvic muscles, it can also improve blood flow and enhance mobility and flexibility in the pelvic region. Additionally, pelvic floor therapy can empower women with education and exercises, giving them tools to manage symptoms and bring relief.
