In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week (April 21-27, 2024), HRC Fertility’s renown reproductive endocrinologists and infertility doctors are speaking on the importance of education, awareness, advocacy, and support.
Founded in 1989 by RESOLVE, National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) aims to create a sense of community and help empower those on their journeys to parenthood while also spreading awareness about the prevalence of infertility. According to Dr. Irene Woo, “There was interesting data from the PEW Research Center in 2023 showing that a growing share of Americans (42%) say they’ve had fertility treatments or know someone personally who has. In that same survey they found that most Americans (61%) say health insurance should cover the cost of fertility treatments. My takeaway is that the need for fertility treatment is extremely prevalent, and we need to advocate for expanded health benefits.”
A 2024 survey recently conducted by HRC Fertility found that nearly 1 in 3 Americans (28.8%) would like more information about the fertility options available to them and their partner. Dr. Mickey Coffler states that “IVF is a well-known fertility treatment, but there are several effective options to consider before or instead of IVF.” He goes on to mention less invasive approaches including ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and fertility surgery. Since every individual and every situation is unique, it is important to consider all fertility treatment options to decide which plan is the best for you. Dr. Bradford Kolb adds, “No one should feel rushed to have children before they are ready, but biology can force one’s hand. We always encourage for our patients to optimize their general health as a means to be proactive with optimizing their eggs and sperm.” HRC Fertility prioritizes caring and personalized services.
In addition to raising awareness surrounding infertility, there is a need to debunk the abundance of fertility myths and misinformation online. For example, many people believe that fertility preservation such as egg freezing guarantees a pregnancy later on. However, Dr. Molly Quinn states that, “Fertility preservation is a great tool but it is not an insurance policy. We can predict how likely it is that one might achieve success with a cohort of frozen oocytes or embryos but no number of oocytes/embryos will guarantee success down the line.” Many different factors may affect a successful pregnancy, and IVF/fertility preservation is just one of them.
Within the past few years, IVF technology has also come a long way and is only continuing to advance. HRC Fertility strives for innovation with the goal of optimal outcomes in fertility care, and was recently recognized as one of Newsweek’s America’s Best Fertility Clinics. Newsweek Best Fertility Clinics Award.
