What is your background with fertility?

I came in through the back door to yoga and fertility. I have been teaching yoga for nearly 30 years and was on the original Yoga Alliance Prenatal Yoga Standards Committee, currently on the International Association of Yoga Therapists Accreditation Committee, am a yoga researcher and I have been training yoga teachers and yoga therapists for many years. Recently, I’ve been approached to discuss this subject more often – it’s a popular topic at the moment!

How does yoga affect fertility?

Most notably, yoga affects fertility through the reduction of stress (for both men and women). However, the growing body of testimonials and new popularity of yoga for infertility seems to be pointing in the direction that there may be several mechanisms for why yoga helps with infertility.

What amount of time do you recommend, daily?

Research has not verified the answer to this question but in my many years of practice I have learned that the right amount of time is the time that can be done on a consistent basis. The increasing body of research on the benefits of exercising often throughout the day, I believe supports the yoga concept of integrating yoga into your lifestyle. Simply put: do deep breathing before getting out of bed in the morning, do a few stretches while you brew your tea, take “2 Minute Yoga Breaks” throughout your work day, etc.

I encourage men and women to try yoga! The side effects are all positive. If there is someone in your area who specializes in yoga for infertility, that would be the place to start. Shop around for an excellent teacher and if needed, try different classes until you find the one that fits!
