Egg Donation Program

Donor egg in vitro fertilization (IVF) has allowed thousands of otherwise infertile couples to create families. Donor eggs are usually needed when woman's eggs will not fertilize and develop properly due to age, genetic abnormalities, damage from treatments such as cancer therapy, premature menopause or unexplained infertility. With egg donation, the father contributes genetically and the recipient mother carries the baby, bonding with it and experiencing the joys of pregnancy and of giving birth.

Donor egg IVF is often required by women in their mid to late 30s and those in their 40s. Unfortunately, there is a direct correlation between increasing female age and declining fertility. Donor eggs taken from a woman in her 20s are much more likely to result in pregnancy than a cycle without donor eggs in a 42-year-old woman.

HRC's southern California infertility clinics host one of the most successful donor egg programs in the United States and the world. We are at the forefront of advances in egg donation technology.

Choosing an Egg Donor

HRC works with several donor egg agencies and have an extensive selection of egg donors. Egg donors are typically between the ages of 21-32, have a healthy weight, are non-smokers, have no chronic medical or genetic diseases and are physically and emotionally healthy. In egg donation, patients regard the matching process as being especially important and the recipient couple is walked through this step very carefully. Usually, a large selection... Read more

Egg Donation Cycle: Overview

Once the eggs are retrieved from the egg donor, they are separated from the follicular fluid and prepared for fertilization by our donor egg program embryologists.  The world-renowned embryologist Barry Behr, Ph.D. is the laboratory director for our California donor egg program. ICSI If the eggs are scheduled for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), sperm will be injected directly into the eggs before incubation. The infertility... Read more

Egg Donation Cycle: The Egg Donor

The egg donor undergoes ovulation induction with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). She also receives either Lupron or Ganirelix to control her stimulation and prevent early ovulation of her eggs. Monitoring the Egg Donation Cycle While undergoing ovulation induction, the egg donor must report regularly to one of our fertility centers for cycle monitoring. HRC has seven Southern California infertility clinics that can perform cycle... Read more

Egg Donation Cycle: The Recipient

Since the recipient in a donor egg IVF cycle is not undergoing ovulation, her cycle must be synched with the egg donor's using medications such as estrogen and progesterone. Drugs like Lupron and Ganirelix block the body's natural production of these hormones and administration of estrogen and progesterone insures normal endometrial development. The couple arrives at our clinic on the day of egg retrieval. The male provides a semen specimen.... Read more

Egg Donation Success Rates

Fortunately IVF success rates for a donor egg cycle are equivalent to the egg donor's age group.  For example, if the eggs of a 22-year old are used in a cycle with a 45-year-old recipient, the success rates will equal the donor's early 20s age group and are high. This means that the typical IVF success rate for a women aged 45 could increase from less than 5 percent to 50 percent. Read more
