Hi there,

My husband and I are both over 30, under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 10 months, with one miscarriage in between. We are planning on seeking your fertility help if we are not successful this month. I wanted to know what the process is for fertility counseling so that we may be prepared. I realize that the process may be different depending on the type of treatment. But I'd like to know the process prior to diagnosing and/undergoing the actual treatment. For example, is there a consultation first? When should the consultation take place (which cycle day)? How many blood tests are there and what is the timing? Just want to make sure that we don't delay by one month because we sought help at a point in the cycle past the necessary test date. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Hagar31484,
The first step is scheduling an initial consult. Trying too hard to time your first visit "right" may not be practical, as it also depends on the availability of "new patient" appointments. Typically your physician will order some blood tests and an ultrasound that are done during the first days of your menstrual period. If you need an HSG, hysteroscopy or saline sonogram for evaluation of your uterine cavity and tubal patency, these are done typically when your menstrual bleeding ceases.
Please feel free to call my office with any other questions regarding your initial consult.
