What exactly is acupuncture and does it really work?
The acupuncture procedure involves the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points that correspond with energy meridians in the body.
If you are considering in vitro fertilization, many studies, including the journal Fertility and Sterility, have been published validating how acupuncture when combined with IVF improves not only your chances of becoming pregnant but also of carrying your baby to term.
Treatment Details and Options:
1) Day of Embryo Transfer Treatments
This has become an important element of a successful IVF treatment. It consists of two treatments done on the same day. Acupuncture is first done 25 minutes before the embryos are transferred, then again after the procedure while you rest. Recent scientific studies and clinical trials demonstrate that acupuncture done following these protocols improves your chances of a successful pregnancy. It improves uterine blood flow, decreases uterine contractions, and reduces stress.
2) Preparation for IVF Program
Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture treatments done twice a week, starting four to six weeks before the day of embryo transfer, increases pregnancy rates. Acupuncture not only increases blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, it appears to regulate fertility hormones which may contribute to follicle development and increased implantation.
3) Pre-Conception Care Program
This comprehensive program is for women who want to ensure that their body is in the best possible condition to conceive. You may be preparing for IVF or simply may want to boost your fertility in order to increase the likelihood of a natural pregnancy. Additionally, if you were initially unsuccessful with IVF and want to try again, this is an excellent way to improve your chances.
The goal is to regulate and restore the natural balance of your body. This will improve your fertility, your overall health, and general well-being.
The program starts with an in-depth evaluation of your condition and situation in order to create a personalized plan for you. We then employ a combination of acupuncture, diet and nutrition, and lifestyle techniques – usually including natural Chinese medicine.
Best results occur when starting 4 to 6 months prior to conception.
4) Pregnancy Support
Of course, after conception, acupuncture is also a powerful tool for supporting a healthy pregnancy. Recent studies have shown it to be particularly helpful in alleviating such uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms as morning sickness, fatigue, edema, elevated blood pressure, and sciatica.
